  • How is shipping calculated?
Sellers determine fair shipping rates based on a variety of factors. Many villages of Alaska are remote and only accessible by boat or plane. In some villages, not even a post office is available. Shipping costs can vary a great deal depending on the seller's location. Purchasing packaging materials, taking the time to carefully package each product, and negotiating shipping are all added time and expense that vary greatly by location. Due to such a wide range of shipping needs and logistical complications that can occur when shipping from remote Alaska, it is more practical for sellers to determine their own shipping costs.

  • What about legal requirements for certain types of products?
The seller is the merchant of record with PayPal and, as such, is responsible to make sure that they comply with all laws and legalities involving shipping or selling their products. This includes, but is not limited to: any products that incorporate Alaskan wildlife or food. It is the seller's responsibility to be aware of and follow the laws and legalities that apply to the particular items they sell and ship. Create Alaska is not responsible for any sellers who do not comply with Federal, State, or any other legal obligations. Create Alaska cannot verify the claims that each seller makes about themself or their products. It is up to the seller to make sure they comply with all Silver Hand, Made in Alaska, Alaska Grown, or other specific certifications used in commerce. It is the responsibility of the buyer to verify the claims of each seller before making a purchase. Create Alaska reserves the right to revoke membership to sellers who do not comply with these policies, and also to inform the legal authorities when breaches of law occur. Please take the time to thoroughly research any legalities in regards to your particular product or situation. If you have any questions or would like to report an abuse, please do not hesitate to contact Create Alaska.

  • Who can sell on Create Alaska?
We understand that this can be a gray area due to the transient nature of modern American culture. For example, what about my friend who was born and raised in Alaska, but now lives in Seattle? Or what about another friend who currently lives in Alaska, but was born and raised elsewhere? Or my sister (who is Alaska Native) her husband is military and had to move out of Alaska but paints Alaska inspired work? Our criteria for Alaskan are as follows: 1) Anyone who lives in Alaska. 2) All Alaska Natives, regardless of where they currently live. 3) Born in Alaska or raised/lived in Alaska for a significant period of time. 4) Your work reflects Alaska. We ask that you make the Alaskan connection in your Storefront if you currently reside outside of Alaska, just to help others understand your source of inspiration. Feel free to contact us if you have questions, comments, or suggestions. We reserve the right to make the final decision, however, because these criteria can be difficult to define.

  • Do I need to pay to sign up or post products?
There is no fee for signing up or posting products. You will be charged nothing until your product is sold. Transactions are made through PayPal, because PayPal is a reputable organization that provides protection for the buyer and the seller. When the buyer makes a purchase, Create Alaska deducts 10% + $0.30 per transaction. PayPal charges a small fee for their services, but refer to PayPal for their official policies. (The Paypal fee listing is a good place to start.) Be sure to consider these costs when pricing your items.

  • How do I sign up and post products?
First, sign up for a free account with PayPal. Then register for free with Create Alaska. Once you are signed up, post a photo and talk about yourself in the storefront. Then add products to your catalog. Buyers will be more likely to purchase your items if they make a personal connection, so be sure to tell the unique stories behind each item you post. This is your chance to talk about what makes your products special. People want to know, so brag a little. Also, be sure to consider commission costs when pricing your items. After you have posted your items, take some time to peruse the additional features your shop offers. You can track your orders and payments, view feedback and reviews about your work, modify emails that are sent to buyers, and more.

  • Why does it take so long for some of my images to upload?
The high quality pictures that most cameras and phones produce are much too large for internet traffic. When a seller uploads images directly from a camera or phone, there can be a delay due to the extreme size of these photos. After you upload an image, Create Alaska automatically shrinks your photos to a more manageable size, so that buyers can quickly view your products. This helps make the site quicker and easier for everyone to enjoy. If you do not already shrink your photos before you upload them to Create Alaska, it will take time for you to put those images on the site. (Again, once you upload them, you do not need to worry about this, because Create Alaska will shrink them if necessary.) If it is taking an extreme amount of time, however, when you try to post your images, we recommend downloading a free image re-sizer and shrinking all your images before uploading to Create Alaska. It is easy and free to download an image re-sizer that matches your computer and operating system. Type "image resizer" into Google for a list of possible options.

  • How does a sale work? How does payment work?
PayPal handles all transactions. When a product is purchased, Create Alaska's commission is deducted from the payment and the remainder is deposited into your PayPal account. After you ship the product to the buyer, make sure to update the order status as "Shipped", so the buyer can track delivery. Once the buyer receives the item, they can update the order status to "Delivered". If there are any complications with the order, the buyer can request a refund or replacement within 48 hours of delivery.

  • How do I determine shipping rates for my products?
Research shipping carriers in your local community. Calculate shipping rates for a package your size. (Much of this can be done online.) Factor in any extra expenses you may incur, such as shipping from remote locations, extra packaging cost or time, etc. As you sell more products, if you find that you are charging too much or too little for shipping, make adjustments to your rates as necessary.

  • Can I ship items from the same order separately?
It is recommended that you ship all items at the same time but they can be in separate packages. Be sure to notify the buyer when packages will be sent.
